Ice Melt.

There is no single best ice melt — there are best blends for different jobs. For most Canadian residential walkways and driveways above –15 °C, Alaskan Ice Melter or Sifto Magic Melt deliver the best price-per-melted-area at $18–$28 per 20 kg bag. For cold-snap conditions below –20 °C, switch to pure calcium chloride pellets (Peladow, Dowflake Extra) which stay effective to –32 °C. For pet safety, Safe Paw or Paw Thaw (chloride-free amide-glycol formulations) cost more but do not burn paws. For new or decorative concrete in the first year of cure, switch to potassium acetate or calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) — non-chloride and freeze-thaw-safe. The wrong product can cost 4x more than necessary; the right product depends on temperature, surface, and pet exposure.

Rock salt is pure sodium chloride (NaCl) mined and screened for highway de-icing — single-ingredient, large crystal, $180–$420 per tonne, effective to –10 °C. Ice melt is a category of blended de-icer formulations sold for residential and light-commercial use, typically mixing rock salt with calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, urea, or non-chloride organics. Ice melts are sold in 20 kg bags at $15–$45 each (effectively $750–$2,250 per tonne), work to lower temperatures (–18 °C to –32 °C depending on blend), come in pet-safe and concrete-safe variants, and have smaller crystals that activate the melt reaction faster. For residential driveways and walkways, ice melt is the right choice; for commercial parking lots and municipal routes, straight rock salt or treated rock salt is the right choice on cost.

Truly chloride-free ice melts — Safe Paw, Paw Thaw, Pet Friendly Ice Melter Plus — use crystalline amide, glycol, or carbohydrate-based active ingredients that do not crystallise on paws and do not cause the chemical burn that chloride salts inflict on cut or cracked pads. They are genuinely safer for dogs and cats. "Pet-safe" branded chloride blends (urea + rock salt, calcium chloride with paw-safe marketing) are less harmful than straight rock salt but still cause paw irritation if your dog walks through fresh application. After any winter walk, regardless of de-icer type, wipe your dog's paws with a warm cloth to remove residue. The biggest pet-safety risk in winter is dehydration from de-icer ingestion (dogs lick salty paws) — keep fresh water available.

Bag-quantity ice melt stocks heavily at Home Depot Canada, Canadian Tire, Lowe's Canada, Rona, Walmart Canada, and Costco Canada from October through March. Alaskan, Halite, Pickle, and Sifto Magic Melt are the most widely stocked brands. For pallet and tote quantities (commercial contractors, condo associations, property managers), order through landscape-supply yards, snow-removal contractors with bulk capacity, or direct from suppliers like ours — the price per kg drops 30–55 % below retail bag pricing at pallet volume. For pet-safe and CMA / potassium acetate specialty products, online stocks at Amazon Canada, Home Hardware, and specialty pet retailers carry the year-round selection that big-box stores drop after February.

A typical residential driveway in Canada is 6 metres wide by 12 metres long, or roughly 720 square feet. At a pre-storm anti-icing rate of 4 lb per 1,000 sq ft, one application consumes 3 lb of ice melt — less than a quarter of a 20 kg bag. At a post-storm de-icing rate of 8 lb per 1,000 sq ft, one application consumes 6 lb. A typical Canadian winter sees 12–20 storm events, so a residential driveway consumes roughly 80–140 lb (36–64 kg) of ice melt per season — two to four 20 kg bags. Stairs, walkways, and the front porch add another 10–20 lb per season. Most residential households over-buy ice melt by 50–100 % because they apply visually instead of by spec.
